Activities
|
 |
As much as it is a Synagogue, NWSS is also a vibrant Jewish Community Centre,
with clubs and events for all ages and interests.
If you would like to enquire about an activity, see the Contacts page.
See the Calendar for dates and times of activities.

Aviv
NWSS Aviv! is a regular and popular event in the synagogue's social calendar.
We meet on the last Sunday of every month, taking turns to meet in members' homes
for a light-hearted evening with a quiz, discussion or game, followed by coffee and cake.
We are always delighted to welcome new members to our dynamic social group for the
'young middle-aged' members of our community.

Bagels & Lox
A social club for members and their families. We meet 4 to 5 times each year
in private houses around the area.
Some people who come to our meetings are regulars at synagogue services. Others
are not, but welcome the opportunity to meet and chat with other Jews and their families
in an informal atmosphere.
Themes for previous evenings include walks, talks and musical evenings, discussions on
social and topical subjects, garden parties and "ask the doctor". But always a nice tea
with cakes - and often bagels and lox.

Book Club
The group meet every six to eight weeks. We meet over a cup of coffee to discuss the current book
in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. New members are always welcome - you do
not have to attend every meeting or read every book.
The books we choose usually have a loose Jewish connection. Recent books include
The Same Sea by Amos Oz, The Dream of Skipio by Iain Pears,
Knowledge of Angels by Gill Patten Walsh, The History of Love
by Nicole Krauss, Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
and The Plot Against America by Philip Roth.

Choir
The choir sings at services on the High Holy Days and, on request, for weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs
and special occasions.
The choir is, as much as any other 'club' or activity in the Synagogue, a
meeting place for those who enjoy the fellowship and social interaction. The choir includes
people of all ages who love music and enjoy singing, from teens up (and up).
Open to all - you don't have to be a Pavarotti !

Film Club
Picture this: friends gathering in the limelight with a hot drink, a bag of popcorn,
paper tissues at the ready as we settle in our seats to watch .. a blank screen as Paul fails
once again to work out how to operate the DVD! Yes, the Film Club has continued to meet most
months and we have shown a lively programme of mainly Israeli films.
In the past few months we've seen, amongst others,
Sallah Shabati, Ushpizim, Live & Become, and (something different)
an evening of American comedy greats.
We'd love you to come along and join us, especially if you can operate a DVD player successfully.
See the regular ad in Haderech for future films/dates. There is no charge, we have some laughs,
a few tears and a lively discussion - occasionally about the film! So, in the immortal words of
the Brothers Warner: That's All Folks !!

Israel Group
Israel is high in the consciousness of our community. The Israel Group coordinates events
- typical annual activities include:
- Yom Ha'atzma'ut, Israel Independence Day - big Shabbat service run by the Group followed by a shared lunch and a concert or other programme.
- Sunday morning forums with guest speakers on topical political or historical subjects - about twice a year.
- A film programme - once or twice a year.
- Arts or cultural events - musical evenings, recently an Israeli wine tasting (surprisingly good and great fun), the occasional food event.
- A Friday erev Shabbat oneg - games, quiz, personal reminiscence - about twice a year.
- Response to topical needs - petitions, charities, etc.
- Advise on Israel arm of our annual Yom Kippur appeal.
The Group meets about eight times a year, usually on Sunday mornings to prepare
events and discuss current issues affecting Israel.
Anyone is welcome to join this Group, help with these events
and have a stimulating discussion at the same time

WIZO (Women's International Zionist Organisation)
WIZO UK is the largest Jewish women's organisation in Great Britain and Ireland.
It is committed to support of the people of Israel through fundraising, education and the
organisation of vital social welfare projects.
The WIZO mission - to deliver the best possible services to the most vulnerable sectors
of Israeli society - has not wavered since the movement's inception nearly ninety years ago.
The Weybridge branch of WIZO meets each month in members' homes with either a speaker
or discussion and lunch for which everyone brings a dish. Meetings are on the first Monday
of each month commencing at 11.30 am (except when this date is a Bank Holiday or Jewish holiday).
New members are always welcome.
