Shabbat

Friday evening services are a wonderful way to unwind from the working week.
They are short, informal, with wonderful songs and a chance to discuss and learn together,
either about current events or sometimes from traditional texts. On the first Friday of each
month we have a much larger gathering than usual and we stay after the service to enjoy a shared meal
(chavurah supper.) People bring veggie or suitable fish dishes to share and we sit and enjoy each
other's company for an hour or two. It is amazing just how wonderful those meals are ..
the spice of friendship adds such a good flavour to the already good food.
Usually, a fairly light programme accompanies the meal (an Oneg or Shabbat joy)
that might take the form of a quiz, a game or just a more formal chat.
Our main services are held on Saturday mornings. These are slightly more formal, especially when there is a simcha, a family celebration.
The focal point of the morning services is the reading of the Torah. Usually, the rabbi gives
a sermon during this service, but sometimes there is the opportunity for less formal
learning together through textual study either in the whole congregation or in small groups.
The rabbi and congregation encourage members to take part in leading services and in reading the Torah.
We especially love our younger members to keep up the skills they learnt through the
B'nei Mitzvah education provided by helping us Shabbat morning.
Friday evening and Shabbat morning services are concluded with Kiddush, sometimes just bread and wine, other times a wonderful feast as some simcha is shared with the community.
Rabbinic tradition teaches that Shabbat gives us a taste of the World to Come, so we very much hope that you will come and taste the delights of Shabbat with our community.
