Conversion

So you think you might be interested in becoming Jewish? Well first of all know: you are most welcome. Many of our members are Jews by Choice and we value the contribution they have made to the community and hope they find a sense of religious and personal fulfilment as Jews.

If you decide that you might want to explore this possibility, then this is what you might expect to be provided, and what you will have to do.

  • Come to services for a few months to see of you are happy with what is on offer religiously. Have a quiet word with Rabbi Jackie.
  • Make an appointment to see Rabbi Jackie. She will want to know about your background and your reasons for wishing to become Jewish. She will also provide you with a bibliography.
  • Continue attending services until the class can receive you, this may take a few months.
  • Attend the Basic Judaism and Basic Hebrew class run by a valued member of the community, Avril Halle, for around 12-18 months and keep attending services.
  • During that time, you will also be seen as required or as you want by Rabbi Jackie, who will send reports on your progress to the Reform Beit Din. (Law Court)
  • Rabbi Jackie will arrange for you to attend the Beit Din, Usually, she and Avril both accompany you to the court. There you will have a short interview and then have to visit the Mikveh, the ritual bath.
  • The following Shabbat, we hold a welcome service for you in the synagogue, call you to bless the Torah and celebrate with you.
Those who are unsure whether or not they wish to become Jewish are welcome to attend services and Avril's class. Judaism believes that all those who live a moral life-style have a place in the World to Come so there is never any pressure put upon you to convert. Just feel welcome in our community.
