Tzedakah

On Yom Kippur (the Jewish Day of Atonement) we are enjoined to pray, to repent and to be charitable.  The last is called “Tzedakah”, and is related to the Hebrew word for wisdom “Tzadiq” – hence the Arabic name “Sadiq”.

So each year we run a financial appeal, which benefits both the Synagogue and selected external charities.

In January 2024, having closed the 2023 Appeal, we donated to four external charities.

Nightingale Hammerson

The first is Nightingale Hammerson, a local Jewish Charity with which we have a long-standing relationship.  It runs a major care home in nearby Clapham, where many of our own members have spent their twilight years.

The generosity of North West Surrey Synagogue is instrumental in helping us provide outstanding care to our Residents at Nightingale House in Clapham. We are truly grateful for your loyal support over many years” (Sara Glaser, Head of Fundraising and Marketing)

Jewish Women’s Aid

The second is Jewish Women’s Aid, a national Jewish Charity which supports Jewish women affected by physical, emotional, psychological, sexual or economic abuse.  This is the first time we have given to this important cause.

In expressing their gratitude for our donation, Nicola Nathan of JWA gave us this quotation from one of their many beneficiaries (700 last year):

The Jewish connection JWA provides has been very helpful. I personally experienced antisemitism in a previous domestic abuse organisation. This shocked me. If you are Jewish you understand it. The practical and emotional support from my caseworker has been excellent. She is devoted and very astute. I am so grateful.

New Israel Fund

The third is the New Israel Fund (another first-time donee) who partner with and fund Israeli organisations that defend democracy and deliver a fairer society for all. The need for their work enabling Israelis and Palestinians to fight back against inequality, injustice and extremism has never been greater.

The New Israel Fund would like to thank North West Surrey Synagogue for their support and generosity during such a challenging period. With your support we can continue changing laws, training leaders, and building a shared future for Arabs and Jews.” (Sarah-Jayne Grahame, Director of Fundraising)

Rainbow Trust

Last but not least is the Rainbow Trust, based in Leatherhead, which provides emotional support to families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness.  This is a vital task, which is why it is our third first-time donee.

We are incredibly grateful to North West Surrey Synagogue for raising funds for Rainbow Trust during their High Holy Days appeal. We could not continue the free service that we offer to families caring for a seriously ill child without the support from the communities where our care teams are based. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated so generously and helped to raise £2,500, which is enough to fund 85 hours of support.” (Katherine Burgess, Corporate and Community Fundraising Manager)
